About Sally
Hi, I'm Sally.
At the heart of everything I do is one simple belief that everyone deserves to feel like they matter.
I live on a farm in the Wimmera, surrounded by open spaces, golden paddocks and the quiet rhythm of country life. Life feels peaceful now, but it wasn't always this way.
Growing up alongside my brother, who lived with disabilities, made me curious. Not about disability but about people. I saw the incredible difference a smile, a kind word, or a moment of acceptance could make. I also saw the pain caused when people felt excluded, judged, or different. Without even realising it, I became curious about belonging.
Everybody has a story, and everybody deserves to feel like they belong. Why do some people make others feel seen while others make them feel invisible? Why do some people feel like they fit in while others spend their lives wondering where they belong?
As a child, I struggled with that myself. When our family moved towns, I found it difficult to fit in and spent years feeling like I didn't belong. Eventually, I left the Wimmera believing a bigger life somewhere else would make me happy. Funny enough, a few years later I found myself back where I'd started after falling in love with a farmer who first caught my attention with his smile. Even then, I kept searching for happiness in all the wrong places through busyness, exercise and achievement. I believed if I worked hard enough, eventually the feelings of not being enough would disappear, but they didn't. The interesting thing is, what I was really searching for wasn't success at all. It was connection, belonging and the feeling that I mattered.
Over the years, through chronic illness, raising a family, personal challenges and more than two decades working alongside people facing adversity, I've learned something powerful. Most people don't need fixing. Most people simply need to feel seen.
Today, I share that message through keynote speaking, writing and my fortnightly newspaper column, Smiles with Sally.
My background includes Psychology, Alcohol and Other Drug Counselling, Motivational Interviewing, Narrative Therapy, Fitness, health promotion and community development. Combined with more than forty years of lived experience, these experiences have given me a deep understanding of people and the stories that often sit beneath the surface.
Whether I'm speaking on stage, writing an article, or having a conversation over a cup of tea, my goal is always the same: To help people feel seen, valued and connected.
Because I've come to believe that culture changes when people feel like they matter, and sometimes the smallest moments between people create the biggest change.
I'm so glad you're here.
